On this day I had to meet a client we were defending I had to go over to get signatures in place to set a court date. He was charged with armed robber... and was on house arrest so he couldn't leave his apartment. I arrived at the building in a really bad part of town made my way up to the 12th. floor, knocked on the door, his mother answered let me in then called out for Tyrell. his mother invited me to sit on the couch I looked around the apartment as I waited, thinking what a shitty place to. Fleming's office. The red in his eyes was a tell tale sign that he hadjust found out that the rumors were true. No one entered the doors ofthis school without a stern warning to avoid that office.I watched as the lady that helped me moved toward the office to let Mr.Fleming know there was someone else there to see him. I could see a nodand the lady turn toward me with a grim look on her face."I hope you didn't 'break procedure' today," she whispered as she quotedthe words with her fingers. "His. We weren’t genetically predetermined to become criminals like society would have you believe. I was surrounded by a different kind of Black men these days. Black men who were doctors, lawyers, politicians, athletes and outstanding students. No rappers or gangsters here. Just smart men trying to better themselves.
