Mary laughed softly, then squeaked when I set her down bum first into the freezing water. We splashed around for a few minutes, washing ourselves down... then pulled what little clothing we had back on. We tiptoed back into the house, and slid beneath the covers, which had gone cold. Mary snuggled into my arms, and we started to warm up. I finally drifted off to sleep like that, and Mary breathed against me all night. 3 Weeks Later I thumped my shoulder into the door, which gave way grudgingly. I. ’ I gestured to my clothes by holding my hands out. ‘Oh Ray, nobody gives a damn,’ she said, reminding me of her penchant for cussing in church. ‘Besides, I’ve seen you look much worse.’ I looked at her expectantly and she went on, ‘You used to come in when the weather was bad and sit in the back with your hat pulled low.’ I was stunned. She noticed me in my homeless state? She actually recognized and remembered me? ‘I thought I was invisible.’ I said it out loud. ‘Nope. God sees everything,. I begin to panic a little as my sudden stop brings someone crashing into the back of me. I feel the bump and instantly blurt out “sorry”, as I turn around to apologise properly, I feel a hand skate over the back of my skirt, from one side of my bum cheeks all the way to the other cheek. I see the man with the phone for a split second but he is holding it up to take a pic of me, obscuring his face and then a second later he is gone. I turn back around flustered, I can feel people’s eyes on me. Margaret glanced over as the girl loaded the computer and took a sip of her drink, reaching into a drawer and passing a small envelope to her. "Wages," she told her with a smile.
