We had been through most of our first year together. I had ridden with both deputies several times. In doing so they talked to me like a cop not a bos.... We told stories about our days working the roads in Warren County. We answered calls and made traffic stops.Every now and then a drunk said to the deputy, I'm going to report you to your boss. The coolest deputy said, "Just a minute." Boss, I got a drunk that wants to report me to my boss. Do you want to talk to him before I lock him up?" the. “I have to get home. My little sister will be home from school soon, and my mom works late.”I turned to face him, and my heart thudded in my chest as we stood face to face. “Um, okay. What are you doing tomorrow?”“Getting beaten up again. You want to come?”“What?”Daniel grinned at me. “Just kidding. Nothing much. Why?”“I want to see you again. Uh, I mean, I enjoyed walking with you...” I slithered to a halt and looked down in consternation.He placed his hand on my shoulder and shook me gently.. “Yes, she is,” I said, and called over my shoulder, “come on down, it's safe.”The girls came down, still frightened. I motioned the officers to chairs, and took one for myself. Jennifer sat next to me, reaching for may hand while Jill sat at the end of the table, holding Jennifer's other hand.“Do you have an explanation for all this?” asked the officer as he pulled out a pocket notebook.I explained, starting with my parent's deaths, the girls driving me home, meeting with Mr. Farnsworth and on. Mom had told him that we were going on a holiday trip to Europe and it was customary that he met her every week for a night or called just so as to pass any wishes.
