I was suddenly aware of her at the far end of the bar, a different jacket, short cut and yellow. I didn’t even know if the note was from her. I unti...d my hair and shook it loose.I was startled when a small group of musicians clattered onto a stage behind me and I turned to watch them as they set up and thus missed her moving to the stool beside me, not noticing until I turned back.“Red suits you better.”“Yellow looks good on you.”“Let’s go to a table.”I followed her across towards the toilet. "I moaned, "Thank you, thank you." I had to stop because I was crying. "Please let's cook supper together and talk." She pulled back gently and nodded. I stood and helped her to her feet and then retrieved the water bottle she had dropped. We walked into the kitchen. I set the bottle on the counter. I handed Maria a paper towel to dry her eyes and used one myself. By then, we were both more composed.I said, "I want to do something simple with you, like cook. Maria, we seem to work together well. I figured that a walk over there wouldn’t hurt, didn’t want to risk having a few drinks and then trying to climb a tree with my car later on. I was lazy, but not that lazy. All together it was just about under ten minute walk. The weather was nice and the sun low in the sky (and it would be for the next few months), when I had arrived at their campsite. They had candles burning, a mosquito repellent net covered the sitting area, and even there weren’t any mozzies yet. “Have a seat, we’ll be. ”“You mean you want more detail than ‘in a complete fucking mess’?”“Well, I’ve not heard them moving around outside.
