It was disconcerting, to say the least. Nobody went anywhere without their weapon. You rolled out of the sack, and the first thing you did was to chec... to make sure your weapon was at hand, and then you dressed. I felt naked.Everybody stared as we landed at Camp Victory. The place was simply a beehive of activity and seemed to grow by the day. I had no idea how much money we had thrown into this place since we got here, but it was simply one gigantic supply depot after another. Hospitals,. Sarah often "dropped her keys" when she noticed me outside smoking. The way my chair faced, I would have to bend my neck obviously to avoid looking. She exaggerated her at-the-waist attempts to grab her keys, and always making sure her assets were best viewable from my perspective. Nothing else, though, ever. Not even formal hellos. She knew I was married as she often saw me with my wife and Sarah had a serious, muscular black boyfriend too who lived elsewhere.After my wife and I got our own. There was no reason to believe otherwise, other than the fact that so much about our lives had become completely unbelievable.On our way back home we stopped at the Starbucks and sipped lattes as we tried to make sense of everything we’d just seen and heard. Personally I’d have preferred a stiff shot of booze, or anything mind-altering for that matter, but being sixteen made that inconvenient.
