When I came in on the ground floor the security guard seemed surprised to see me (fair enough) and looked slightly nervous. He was from Eastern Europe... tough looking guy , big and broad, very athletic. As usual I said hi and we exchanged pleasantries before I went up to my desk on the third floor. As expected there was nobody about and I immediately fired up my computer. As that was happening I thought I heard a noise coming from one of the meeting rooms near my desk. Initially, I I ignored. I know that I'm not supposed to move, or turn my head, I'm supposed to be a still as the stone. So I try and focus on it. It's pinkish, and subtly colored with veins of paler stone running through it. The word 'travertine' floats into my brain from some half-remembered geology class.But as much as I try to focus my attention on the pillar I can't help but feel the presence behind me. The skin on my back tingles like it's electrically charged. The hair on the nape of my neck stands up as I feel. My plan was to go east and find the Licking river, then follow that north. Without very many landmarks, I was confident I would get lost. If I just stuck to my two general directions though, worst case scenario I would find my way back in less than two weeks. The only real problem is there are a ton of small streams and creeks, and a few larger streams this direction. Being able to discern which one was the Licking river, could be difficult. If I can’t figure it out in two days, we might have. She gathered her clothes and got dressed silently, then kissed David onhis forehead while he slept. As she walked back to her car still parkedat the coffee shop, she cried, thinking about how this was the last timeshe?d see Jeremy through Sonya?s eyes.When she got back to her apartment, Sonya was too depressed to do muchelse.
