Well, I don't think I need to tell you that, at that point, mostof the blood in our bodies was pumping through our little guys inour pants. We still might not have said yes, except for onething. Even though they were four years ahead of us, both Carland me had heard about Denise and Maria, and all the stories weheard were good. The two of them were as nice as possible, alwayssticking up for the little guy, and never tolerating it whensomebody got bullied in their presence. So we took a chance. The head monk read Buddhist scripture from scrolls and when these long readings paused, the other monks would chant musically and people would start playing their distinctive Thai instruments. The music they played was cheery… if a little weird. Shockingly, there were xylophone-like instruments adorned with flashing Christmas lights. Through all of this, most everybody sipped coconut milk. My remaining students were a pleasure to teach, despite their perhaps universal desire to talk and laugh.
