Coming from my background I had thrown out the idea without considering how they would react to it. Although women acted as the defenders of the house...old when the men were gone, the idea of repelling Indians or thieves was not considered as something that a woman would do voluntarily.I got even more shocked looks when I stated that the women going with us needed to learn how to shoot both a rifle and a pistol.
