The giggle of someone who was having a rest and suddenly began to be tickled. The laughter rang through the forest long after it stopped, but the smil... remained. The woodsman stood like the victim of a basilisk. The haft of his ax halfway lifted in front of his chest and face protectively. His center of gravity was slightly behind his feet almost as if his body had begun to run away but his feet were busy picking their nose. He lifted the haft further as she stepped forwards. She didn’t sway. I stashed the box away for later examination. I finished moving her Saturday evening. The rest of the week I thought about how to get to know Fran a little better. Early the next Saturday morning I drove over to Fran's house. The sun was just coming up and the neighborhood was quiet. I called Fran from my cellphone and after several rings she answered. It was apparent that she had been sleeping so I apologized for waking her but told her I had something that belonged to her and wanted to return. I looked at her bed and it looked slept in. Karen went into the bedroom and nosed around.She said, "Her phone and keys are here. Her sleep clothes are in the bed under the covers. Joe, I'm worried."I said, "I am, too. I'm going to call the police."I did and the person answering agreed that one of their patrolmen would come by and take a statement.It was almost an hour later when Officer Joe Hoskins knocked on the front door. I let him inside. I said, "Officer, our daughter lives here and it. But this time she took it one step further. She popped a lot of pain pills. When she called slurring and told us what she had done, we immediately headed for her house. My brother-in-law was out with his friends, so my wife and I called 911 as we headed over to the house. As we got there, the paramedics pulled up. They checked her over and told us that she would not over dose with the type of pain pill she took. As they left, my wife took all of the alcohol and pills from the house and put them.
