I had been drifting in and out of consciousness and didn't really get a proper night's sleep. Luckily, I'd had some shuteye on the plane from Chicago.... slipped out of bed just before six that morning and pulled on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. I closed the door behind me as I headed for the galley and started the morning coffee. I looked at the calendar. It was Thursday, July 7. I had missed another July 4th while I was out of the country. I looked out the window in front and saw another. I looked up in shock, grabbed my flashlight and sprinted for the boat docks. Jason said, "What took you so long? I need to show you something!" I replied, "I have something to show you too!" We rowed out to the middle of the lake and I tossed the anchor into the water. It was pitch black outside, except for the light of the moon, which was trying to shine through the overcast sky above. Other than the crickets chirping in the brush around us, it was really quiet. Dani didn't seem to realize it, but by the time the twins were three our marriage was in serious trouble with me doubting that she cared about anything but her job.Things changed for me when the twins turned three. I began taking them out to the park to play and to the community pool so they could splash around and learn to swim. I started meeting mothers who brought their children out for the same thing. The wives of the same guys who were looking down their noses at me and didn't want to golf. Obviously, my children are grown and most of their children age grown and have children of their own. Eighteen great grand children are an honor and pleasure. Even the ones in diapers give me great joy. I would not have traded my life with Elaine or my decedents for the world. Elaine would have loved to hold the little ones and talk to them. Like I did for my children I still read to my grand and great grand children. Little things make for great memories.It all started in synagogue in a Friday.
