Melinda, instead of being in the guest room, was slumped in a chair next to mom's bed. She was delirious with the fever, but had a few lucid moments. ... tried to get her to her bed, but she wouldn't leave Mom, saying Mom needed her. Finally, I guess, she must have realized she wasn't going to make it. She looked at me sadly and said, 'Tell Gavin I'm sorry.' A few minutes later, she was gone. I cried over her for a while, then stumbled to the kitchen for something to eat. There was some dried. I didn’t even realize what time it was until the cleaning lady came in. She yelped when she saw me, not expecting to see anyone in the office late outside of tax season. As she muttered her apologies for interfering with my work, I grabbed my coat and raced home. I threw the frozen pizza in the oven before taking off my shoes and socks. I hung up my coat and began to get settled on the couch. As I found my favorite Food Network show on the TIVO, the buzzer sounded for the pizza. I grabbed it. "Anika?" I whirled trying to find the voice."I take it that was somebody you know," the stewardess said looking around with me. "Over there! The girl in the pretty dress with the little boy and the well-dressed woman."I looked where she was pointing and saw Aunt Sabrine walking towards me with Anika and Jake. Anika was, indeed, in a gorgeous dress of pink silk and red velvet. Her walk was drawing nearly as many eyes as Aunt Sabrine in her sleek business suit and high heels. Jake looked grubby.
