Jack turned around and crept back down the ditch toward his horse. He stopped a few feet away from where he had hit the ditch and propped his hat on a...stick at the side of the ditch with the hat just showing. The hat was in position for only a few seconds when a shot rang out and the hat went flying.Jack let out a yell like he had been hit, possibly a mortal wound, and scurried back a ways from the punctured hat. He had his pistol out and fully cocked, just waiting for the assassin to show. It was an instant reminder of why I hated beingaround children of any age.I'd mostly forgotten about that now, though, and looking at the time,realised it was 7:00 PM and that I should get a move on and get ready.But then, suddenly, a knock at the front door.At first I thought about ignoring it. It was probably the windowcleaner, or somebody else who I'd have to pay some of the money I hadleft from the shop to.It wouldn't be a friend, or so I thought, because they weren't due foranother. "I mean, you know your body just came through the biggest trauma it can have, so you wouldn't be afraid to have me see it, would you?" Oh, Honey... !" Once more he stopped her gently."Good! I'm glad I don't have to deal with any nonsense like that." He finally got the reaction he was hoping for when she gave a little giggle and held up her arms so he could pull off her sweater.He had turned up the heat, and the bedroom was small enough so the heat from the tub filling in the adjacent bathroom. As she looked up to let me know that she had swallowed it all I noticed a slight movement in the gap between the curtains on the "hedge side" of the caravan. I got up, moved to the curtains and looked out, in the darkness I could see the shape of a man about 20 yards away, walking beside the hedge. Someone had been watching us through the curtains. Th next morning I went out and walked round the back of the caravan. Sure enough there were marks on the wall to show that he'd not only been.
